Lahore : Main | Mughal Buildings | Jehangir's Tomb | Wazir Khan Mosque

This section is being expanded, separating the various monuments which are combined here.

The Lahore Fort was a center of the Mughal Empire,

This shows some of the tilework on the exterior wall of the fort, making this the most beautiful structure to be stormed.

Every part of this structure demonstrates the detail and craft of the architects who improved upon this structure under succeeding rulers. Containing an elephant gate [with elephant steps], this fort is grand, beautiful, and an aesthetic education for Westerners like me.

The `shish mahal' or Hall of Mirrors. Located in the harem's area of the fort, this structure must have been fantastic during the candlelit evening music recitals.

This area opened upon a central garden, forming one side of a quadrangle of incredible buildings like this one.

Badhshai Mosque, which can hold 80 to 100 thousand people praying together.

This huge courtyard allows the incredible central domes to be enjoyed visually to the fullest. The huge open space focuses the eye, and allows the scope of the architecture to be seen.

Sadly, photography is not as kind, though the tiny people serve as a kind of scale.

A view from Shalimar Gardens, a large complex built across the city from the fort. Here the large trees provide cool shade, and the structured waterways, fountains, and architecture.

A classic Mughal Garden, just a stroll about the grounds provides calm and rejuvenation.
