When meeting the man at the bottom of Udegram hill, he quickly introduced himself as an engineer and local resident. He politely asked me to have chai with him, an invitation I was glad to accept due to his excellent English.

Here is a view of his street, taken from his doorstep.

He invited me in, got tea, and had his brothers stop by.

A view of my host, his younger brother, and his two little girls.

Note the TV which he turned for my visit, evidently to make me feel at home. It drove me up the wall, but I did not know how to be polite and get get him to turn it off.

His little girls provided our closest connection. They were friendly and wanted to play the global 2 year old games all kids play. I happily obliged, happy to be able to make his children giggle. While I could do little to repay his kindness, I hope his smiling children did something to show him my gratitude.

Here he is with his brothers and children in his courtyard. The lighting casts bad shadows and made photography difficult.

After getting some family photos, I made my way back to the road to hitch a ride to Mingora.

Everywhere I went in Swat, I was welcomed in with incredible hospitality. Like many areas of Pakistan, the beauty of the people enhanced the already gorgeous scenery.
